Pompey's Pillar

Pompey Pillar is the largest monolithic column ever erected in Egypt. It is located in the old Serapeum of Alexandria, a temple dedicated to the god Serapis. The Column stands for about 27 meters and it is made of red granite from Aswan similar to Hatshepsut Obelisk in Karnak. It was a memorial column Set up in honor of the Roman emperor Diocletian between 298 - 302 AD. Originally, there was a huge statue of Diocletian on top of the column. Also, there are some artifacts in the area such as a basin used for purification, and a black statue of basalt that dates back to the reign of Hadrian, representing the God Serapis in the shape of a bull.

The Catacomb of Kom El Shoqafa
